More than ever before, sport means business. The growth in the Irish economy from the mid 1990s was matched by enormous growth in our sports' industry. For those involved, the stakes become ever higher with increased complexity and higher expectations and demands on all.
Sporting bodies face the same issues as any business. They must for example ensure that the most appropriate corporate structure is selected to achieve objectives, maximise taxation benefits and have clarity around the ownership and security of valuable assets. Where facilities or grounds are being expanded or developed, they must attend to the usual funding, planning, construction and health & safety issues.
Sporting bodies also face challenges unique to themselves. It is crucial that relationships with players, members, officers, volunteers, employees, financiers and users of services are properly defined. Professionalism and an awareness of the marketing opportunities that it presents raise particular issues. Clubs, counties and individuals have significant earning potential and this has a knock-on effect on the enterprises with which they are involved and the implications of their activities. There is increasing pressure to effectively maximise revenue streams and the ability to do so requires that the opportunities provided by merchandising, sponsorship, advertising and general intellectual property law must be identified and appropriately utilised.
As a full service law firm we advise stake-holders on all of the above areas.
