| New Law to Regulate Charities, March 2009 | The Charities Act (the “Act”) was signed into law by the President on 28 February 2009. The Act will be commenced in stages, and the focus from here on will therefore be on implementation of the new regulatory system established by the legislation.
The Act provides, for the first time, for the establishment of a framework for the regulation of charities in Ireland.
The purpose of the Act is to reform the law relating to charities in order to ensure greater accountability, to protect against abuse of charitable status and fraud, enhance public trust and confidence in charities and increase transparency in the sector.
As of the date of this briefing, no provision of the Act has yet been brought into force. |
