Defamation Bill at Final Stage, July 2009 Libel reform is now imminent following the final passage of the Defamation Bill 2006 through the Oireachtas on 9 July. The new regime will see greater use of pre-trial applications and overall should achieve greater certainty for plaintiffs and defendants alike. Particularly welcome for media organisations are the new offer of amends procedure and the reduction of the limitation period from 6 years to 1 year, while those contemplating legal action will be able to opt for declaratory orders and summary judgment.
