06 May 2011
McCann FitzGerald, was last night named Ireland Law Firm of the Year at the Chambers Europe Awards for Excellence ceremony in Amsterdam. This is the second time that the firm has won this prestigious award in the last four years, and follows its receipt earlier this year of the Ireland Law Firm of the Year award by the International Financial Law Review.
The Chambers Europe Awards for Excellence are presented annually and are based on a review of Ireland’s most significant corporate and finance transactions over the past twelve months. In making the award, Chambers noted the firm’s outstanding year in Equity Capital Markets; Corporate, Banking and Financial Services, Restructuring, and Energy and Natural Resources.
In the last 12 months, McCann FitzGerald has acted as lead counsel on a number of high profile and complex transactions including AIB’s $2 billion sale of its shareholding in M&T Bank Corporation in the US; the sale of the deposit books of Anglo Irish Bank and Irish Nationwide; ESB’s successful €365m US private placement and the €217 million acquisition of Norkom Group plc by BAE Systems plc. It also acted as lead counsel to NYSE listed AerCap in its US$380 million deal with Abu Dhabi based investment holding company Waha Capital. Most recently, the firm advised the joint administrators on the sale (expected to complete later this year) of the general insurance business of Quinn Insurance Limited (under administration) and the sale by Petroceltic International of a stake in Algerian PSC to ENEL, Europe’s second largest electricity utility company.
Accepting the award, McCann FitzGerald Chairman John Cronin said: “This award reflects the fact that at a time when Ireland and Irish companies are experiencing great challenges, our clients have continued to use the firm on their most challenging matters. We are very grateful to them for their confidence in our abilities to assist them, and are pleased to have the firm’s work for clients recognised by Chambers Europe, in addition to earlier awards received."
He continued “We would like to thank our clients for the work that they have entrusted to us. We hope that our expertise, experience and ability to adapt to changing circumstances will continue to help them as they work to confront the difficult business and legal challenges of the current economic climate.”
